Britner signs with Revolution

Matthew Britner has cracked Major League Soccer.

The 22-year-old defender from Halifax signed with the New England Revolution yesterday and will occupy one of the club’s eight international roster spots this season. He will also fill one of the team’s 10 developmental spots.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The Revolution selected Britner in the third round (41st overall) of this year’s MLS SuperDraft after he completed an award-filled NCAA career at Brown University last December.

Britner served as captain at Brown, earning Ivy League player-of-the-year honours and a second all-Ivy selection. The former Nova Scotia Soccer League MVP and Canadian youth-team member was also named a third-team all-American.

The Revolution, based in Foxborough, Mass., is among the top teams in the league, having advanced to three straight MLS Cup finals. It went 14-8-8 last season, fourth in the league.

New England was 1-1 heading into last night’s road game against the Kansas City Wizards. Britner did not dress.

Britner is the second Nova Scotian to crack MLS. Bedford’s Ante Jazic is a defender for the Los Angeles Galaxy, although he is currently sidelined after having ankle surgery. Jazic, a 32-year-old defender, is expected to return later this month.
