Canada keeps first place with draw against Colombia

With a 1:1 draw against Colombia in its second match, Canada remains in first place in Group A at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008. Canada’s Nkem Ezurike (Sackville, NS) scored in the ninth minute before Colombia’s Ingrid Vidal equalised just a minute later.

'We have to see the result as a point gained rather than two dropped,' said Canada’s assistant coach Lewis Page (Chester, NS). 'It leaves us in a decent position and although you’re never too confident, we’d probably have taken four points from our first two games if you’d offered us that before the tournament.'

Canada is in first place with four points after two matches (one win, one draw, no losses). Denmark is second (1-1-0, four points) followed by Colombia (0-2-0, two points) and New Zealand (0-0-2, no points). Denmark won 2:1 over New Zealand on 1 November.

Should Canada advance to the quarter-final stage, it will meet one of the top-two teams from Group B. The quarter-final match is scheduled for 8 November in Wellington. In Christchurch today, European champion Germany (2-0-0) remains in first place after a 3:2 win over Ghana (0-1-1). DPR Korea (1-1-0) is in second place after a 2:1 win over Costa Rica (0-0-2).

Canada’s third and final group match is 4 November against Denmark. The match will be streamed live on CBCSports.ca. In Canada, the kickoff is 02.00 ET on 4 November or 23.00 PT on 3 November.

The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008 features 16 teams divided into four groups. The top-two teams from each group advance to the quarter-final stage. The teams are playing their way to the grand final on 16 November. The Sunday final kicks off at 16.00 in Auckland, which in Canada translates to Saturday 15 November at 23.00 ET or 20.00 PT.
