Gaudet to Play in U20 World Cup Qualification

Coach Tony Fonseca has confirmed his final roster before this week's CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship in Trinidad & Tobago. Fonseca has selected 20 players, including 19 year old Derek Gaudet (Bayside, NS) for the tournament which not only serves as the confederation championship, but also the qualification route for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009.

The 2009 CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship features eight teams separated in two groups. Two teams from each group will advance to Egypt 2009. Honduras, who eliminated St. Vincent & the Grenadines in the preliminary competition yesterday, joins USA, El Salvador and Jamaica in Group A. Canada faces Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico and Costa Rica in Group B.

Canada's roster features three returning players from the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007. That trio features defender Nana Attakora-Gyan, forward Marcus Haber and defender Kennedy Owusu-Ansah. Attakora-Gyan - the 2008 Canadian U-20 Player of the Year - and Owusu-Ansah both still play for their respective clubs in Toronto FC and Hertha Berlin BSC (Germany). While Haber had been playing in Netherlands two years ago, he now features for Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Haber is in fact one of seven Whitecaps FC players on the Canadian lineup. Haber, goalkeeper Julien Latendresse-Lévesque, midfielder Philippe Davies, forward Randy Edwini-Bonsu and defender Ethan Gage are all playing in Vancouver. Defender Adam Straith and forward Kyle Porter are also Whitecaps FC players, although both are on loan to Energie Cottbus in Germany.

Like Toronto FC, the Impact de Montréal has sent one player - defender Alex Surprenant. Last year, Surprenant was the second-youngest player to feature in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. He played 33 minutes for the champion Impact. Midfielder Derek Gaudet (whose sister won the 2008 Jubilee Trophy with Halifax City) is the one unattached player on the lineup while Michael Pereira (Providence College) and Teal Bunbury (University of Akron) are the two players representing American colleges. Of note, Bunbury is the son of former Canadian Player of the Year Alex Bunbury.

Along with Owusu-Ansah, Straith and Porter, other Canadians representing European clubs are goalkeeper Adam Street (West Ham United in England), defender Eddy Sidra (FC Energie Cottbus in Germany), midfielder Shaun Saiko (Middlesborough in England), midfielder Brandon Bonifacio (FC Zwolle in Netherlands), defender/midfielder Fabrice Lassonde (FC Ingolstadt 04 in Germany), defender/midfielder Paris Nakajima-Farran (Næstved BK in Denmark), and midfielder/forward Igor Pisanjuk (Ferencvárosi Torna Club in Hungary).

Canada will play three games in the group phase of the 2009 CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship. Canada plays 7 March against host Trinidad & Tobago, 9 March against Mexico and 11 March against Costa Rica.

Should Canada finish first or second in its group, it will advance to the 13 March semi-final and qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009. While the CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship runs through 15 March, the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 kicks off 24 September and runs through 16 October 2009.
