A former Cape Breton University Capers men’s soccer team member has been identified as the victim in a fatal, single-vehicle accident on Lingan Road, Saturday morning.
A moment of silence was held at CBU spring convocation today for Connor Timmons, son of Stephen (Ness) Timmons, long-time head coach of the Capers women’s soccer team.
Sgt. Barry Morrison of the Cape Breton Regional Police, Central Division, said the incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m. He said the accident happened near the New Waterford end of the road close to the 1100 address block of homes.
“I believe police came upon an accident scene, I don’t know if they received a call on it but I know a member came upon it,” he said. “It was an overturned car on Lingan Road and a gentleman had been ejected from the car as a result of the accident. Shortly after that, he was pronounced deceased at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.”
Timmons suited up for the Capers men’s side that captured the school’s first Atlantic University Sport men’s soccer championship in 2007. He was also a key member of the Cape Breton Selects under-18 boys soccer team that captured a Nova Scotia Soccer League title in 2006.
Morrison said the cause of the accident is still under investigation by the traffic safety unit. He added there is no criminal investigation at this time.
