Mystics win ACAA title

What a difference a year makes for the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics women’s soccer program.

Exactly one year ago, the top-ranked Mystics were upset in the semifinal of the ACAA championship.

On Sunday, they redeemed themselves.

Conference rookie of the year Jill Edwards knocked in a header at the 65th minute for the only goal of the match as MSVU blanked the University of King’s College Blue Devils 1-0 in the matinee final in Charlottetown.

"It was exactly one year ago to the day that we were upset in the semifinal at the championships," Mystics second-year head coach Amit Batra said following the match. "It was 365 days to think about that game. The girls were ready and are just thrilled to pull out a victory."

Both squads went undefeated during the regular season — the Mount finished at 10-0-2 while King’s was 7-0-5. And in their two head-to-head meetings, the teams played to a draw in each one.

For the first 65 minutes of their third matchup of the season, they were tied. That was until Edwards, a P.E.I. native, redirected a cross from Ashley Westhaver for the deciding marker.

Breagh MacDonald posted the shutout.

The Mystics will travel to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national championship, Nov. 4-7 hosted by Humber College in Ontario. The games will be played in Vaughan, Ont.

In the men’s final, also in Charlottetown:

King’s will leave the Island empty-handed.

The Blue Devils dropped a 2-0 decision to the host Holland College Hurricanes in the championship game.

Ties Hakkers scored with under two minutes remaining in the first half and Tommy Flemming added the insurance marker at the 84-minute marker to seal the victory for the Hurricanes.

Holland College advances to the CCAA men’s soccer championship, which will be held Nov. 4-7 at Seneca College in North York, Ont.
